Getting Ready to List Abby Wilson February 18, 2025
We loved talking with Kaitlyn at Pittsburgh Magazine for this fab and practical listicle about what to avoid when you are getting ready to sell your house. 😬💰🏡🚿🧹
Our highlights...
(1) Smell you later, skater — 🐈 might make the internet livable, but they almost always leave at least some smell in the home -- sorry, cat lovers (I am one, by the way, and we do have a cat in our house). We are NOT telling you to get rid of your cat, and we are NOT saying that cats are bad, for the love of god. We are telling you, however, that here are ways to manage your cats when you're preparing to sell your house. They might include black lights...? Talk to us if you have questions about. The reality is, the smell of cats can turn people off from an otherwise mint condition home. Thinking of getting a cat and selling your house? WAIT UNTIL YOU SELL THE HOUSE!
(2) Cigarettes are bad, but not only do too many people still smoke cigarettes, an insane number of Pittsburgh home owners still smoke them INSIDE homes that are about to be sold. Like for real guys? Do yourself a favor, please - send the smokers outside. Removing the smell of tobacco smoke from a home is expensive, time consuming, and labor intensive.
(3) Your Pgh potty won’t pass for a legit half bath in an otherwise unfinished basement unless you really go to town on that baby and the ceilings are not too hobbit-like — and definitely not a full bath, even if you put a shower curtain around a hoze nozzle (yes we’ve seen that in an East End property that shall remain nameless)... Looking to make major renovations in anticipation of a sale? Please get in touch with us and we're happy to advise!
(4) Don’t bank on a lazy home inspector. Do they exist? Sure. But this is no longer the seller’s market of peak covid housing frenzy. Buyers are taking time, doing their homework, and there are some damn good home inspectors in the burgh. Real estate surprises are never good surprises. Get a pre-list inspection, just do it. Please. 🙏
(5) If you want to know how we list houses, it’s a 3 legged stool: house ready - price right - market tight.
